Early Fetal Anomaly (Anatomy) Scan

All women in the UK are offered a scan in the mid-trimester (20 weeks) called a fetal anomaly scan by the NHS. The purpose of this scan is to perform a detailed assessment of your baby's development and growth and ensure that your baby is developing as expected.

Some women may wish to have earlier assessment of their baby's development performed, particularly if they have a previous complicated pregnancy or concerns in their current pregnancy.

At The Pregnancy Experts our consultant obstetrician will perform a comprehensive, detailed assessment of your baby's physical development between 16 - 20 weeks. As a fetal medicine consultant he is highly trained in fetal anatomy assessment.

Additionally, he will conduct an assessment of your baby's growth - this includes measurement of your baby's head, brain structures, abdomen and leg length. These measurements will indicate whether your baby is growing as expected.

The position of your placenta, the fluid volumes around baby and the umbilical cord will also be checked routinely.

The sex of your baby can also be determined at this scan, if you wish to find out.

Following the scan our consultant will provide a detailed explanation of the findings and produce a detailed report for your pregnancy records.

Duration: 45 - 60 minutes
